Anakin Skywalker's Padawan: The Sabers He Returned to Ahsoka

A Togruta Padawan opening a case with two saber hilts, her Jedi master beside her in a hangar

No. Anakin Skywalker did not give Ahsoka Tano his own saber. Ahsoka was his Padawan, and in The Clone Wars (TCW) season 7, episode 9, "Old Friends Not Forgotten" (set in 19 BBY), he returned her two original sabers, a main hilt and a shoto, after adjusting them so the blades came up blue instead of green. It is the last time the two see each other before Anakin falls to the dark side.

Quick answer

  • Who: Ahsoka Tano, assigned to Anakin at fourteen and his only apprentice in canon.
  • What he handed over: her own two sabers, kept by Anakin after she left the Jedi Order.
  • How many: two, a full-length main hilt and a shorter shoto.
  • Blade color: blue when returned. They had been green before.
  • Was it his saber? No. The blue pair was never his own weapon.

Who was Anakin Skywalker's Padawan?

Ahsoka Tano, and she was not his idea. Yoda granted her the rank of Padawan at fourteen and paired her with Anakin at the start of the Clone Wars, on the theory that teaching would force him to grow up. Neither of them enjoyed the first weeks. He called her Snips. She called him Skyguy. They spent the rest of the war as commander and apprentice in the 501st, and she is the only Padawan canon gives him.

A tall Jedi master and a small apprentice facing each other in silhouette in a dark hangar

Master and apprentice: years of shared battles, then a long separation.

Their first outing was Christophsis, a running battle she was dropped into mid-firefight, and it set the pattern for the years that followed: he improvised, she improvised harder, and both of them survived on the other's reflexes. By the time the war reached its last month she had commanded troops, left the Order, and built a life that had nothing to do with him.

That assignment is the reason the return scene lands at all. Everything Anakin does with her sabers later only carries weight because the two of them had years of shared battles behind them. Her full story, from Shili to Peridea, sits in the Ahsoka Tano character guide; the relationship itself is tracked in the Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker relationship timeline.

What did Anakin actually give Ahsoka?

Three things, and they are easy to separate once you line them up. The weapons were hers. There were two of them. He had changed how they looked.

Two hands gripping Ahsoka's main hilt and shoto as both blue blades ignite

Her own pair, back in her hands: the longer main hilt and the shorter shoto.

StarWars.com covers the moment in its episode guide for "Old Friends Not Forgotten", and its Clone Wars Declassified write-up spells it out: on the Republic cruiser, Anakin presents Ahsoka with her old sabers, with a few tweaks that now make the blades glow blue. Her old sabers. Not a new weapon, and not his.

The question The answer
Whose sabers were they? Ahsoka's own, kept by Anakin after she left the Order
Who handed them back? Anakin Skywalker
How many were returned? Two: a main hilt and a shoto
What color were the blades? Blue
Was it Anakin's personal saber? No

The distinction is not pedantry. A master handing over his own weapon is a different story from a master quietly keeping his student's weapons all that time and giving them back improved. The first is a handover of authority. The second is maintenance of a person he refused to write off.

When does he return them?

In "Old Friends Not Forgotten," TCW season 7, episode 9, set in 19 BBY. Ahsoka comes back to the Republic with Bo-Katan to ask for help taking Mandalore from Maul. She gets a partial yes and a complication: Coruscant is attacked, Chancellor Palpatine is taken, and Anakin and Obi-Wan have to leave immediately for the events of Revenge of the Sith.

Season 7, episode 9: the handover comes just before the Siege of Mandalore.

What he can still do is lend her Rex and half a division, and before he goes he gives her back the pair she has not carried since she left the Order. Both blades are blue.

His explanation is flat and practical: he took care of them, and they may be a little better than before. She does not answer with a speech. She takes them, says goodbye, and wishes him luck.

That timing is what makes it a farewell rather than a reunion. The two of them do not know it yet, but the next time they are in the same room, one of them is Darth Vader. The StarWars.com Clone Wars rewatch calls it a bittersweet reunion and points out that neither of them can know it is the last time they will see each other before Anakin turns to the dark side.

Why are the blades blue?

Because he changed them while she was gone. That is the whole of what the official record says: he kept her sabers, made adjustments, and when she ignited them the blades came up blue instead of green.

Blue when he returned them; green when she carried them as a Padawan.

Green was the original. As a Padawan she carried a green main blade and a shorter green shoto, the pair that made her dual-wielding silhouette recognizable across the Clone Wars.

What the official account does not say

It does not say how. No official source describes what he actually did to the sabers, only that the blades now come up blue.

What Filoni said about it

The closest thing to an explanation comes from Dave Filoni, executive producer and supervising director on TCW, who answered a viewer's question about it in the Clone Wars Download episode for "The Phantom Apprentice" (as reported by WhatCulture). His reason was storytelling: he wanted a clear connection between the master and apprentice relationship, so he shifted her sabers to blue, like Anakin's. In the story, that means Anakin made her blades match his.

The gesture also reads as character work, and it is worth keeping separate from the plot fact: changing the sabers shows Anakin's care, and also his need to keep a hand in her life after she left. It is generous and possessive at the same time.

That double edge is why the scene is remembered. The blades are a gift, a repair, and a claim, all in one gesture.

Did Anakin give Ahsoka his own saber?

No. This is the most common mix-up about the scene, and it survives because both weapons are blue and both belong to the same story.

One saber, two sabers. The whole scene turns on which it was.

Ahsoka's pair Anakin's own saber
Whose weapon Hers, built to her hands His, built by him
What happened in season 7 Returned to her, adjusted Stayed with him
Where it goes next Left in the wreckage after Order 66 Lost on Mustafar, later reached Luke, then Rey
Why the confusion Blue blades after his adjustments Blue blades for his entire Jedi career

Color is not identity. His saber's route through the saga is its own story, told in the Anakin to Vader saber transformation; the seven replicas of that hilt are compared in the best Anakin Skywalker saber replica guide. Hers goes somewhere else entirely, and it does not survive the war intact.

A pair, not a saber: why two hilts

Ahsoka does not carry one weapon. She carries a matched set: a full-length hilt in her main hand and a short shoto in her off hand, the combination the Jedi call Jar'Kai. The StarWars.com Databank describes the second one as a shorter, shoto-style blade built to complement her primary weapon.

Top-down view of Ahsoka's main hilt and shorter shoto laid parallel

A main hilt and a shoto: two lengths, one matched pair.

That design choice has a physical logic. She was small and fast, and against opponents with longer reach a single blade left her reaching. A short second blade closes the inside line, covers a retreat, and lets her fight in the pocket where a taller duelist cannot bring his weight to bear.

The geometry the replicas reproduce

Main hilt (replica)280 mm (11 in)
Shoto hilt (replica)210 mm (8.3 in)
Shoto ÷ main75 percent
Length gap70 mm

Those figures are the dimensions CCSabers publishes for its TCW-pattern pair. They are product measurements, not readings taken from a screen-used prop.

Blade length follows the same logic. The TCW Ver. lists a 36-inch main blade and a 32-inch shoto, a ratio of 89 percent. That is a gentler step down in proportion than the hilts, although the absolute gap is larger: about 100 mm between the blades, against 70 mm between the hilts.

At 75 percent, the shoto reads as a short blade in the hand rather than a second full saber. That ratio is the thing to check before buying a set, because not every Ahsoka-inspired pair uses it: the SE pair in the same store runs 290 mm and 250 mm, where the short hilt is 86 percent of the long one and the two read as a matched pair of full-size sabers.

What happened to the pair after Order 66

She kept them until the last possible moment. When Order 66 went out aboard the Tribunal, Ahsoka fought her way off the ship with Rex, then left both sabers in the wreckage so the Empire would conclude she had died in the crash. It worked. In the epilogue, Darth Vader walks through the snow, finds one of them, and ignites it.

Ahsoka's two silver hilts half buried in ash with firelight behind

Left in the wreckage of the Tribunal, where Vader later finds one.

She does not go back for them. The white blades she carries later are a different pair, built much later, and the story of where they came from is its own subject. Ahsoka Tano's sabers: every color, hilt and era covers every hilt she carried, and how the white pair differs from the blue one.

So the blue pair has no third act. It is returned, used for one siege, and abandoned on purpose. That is a strange fate for the most personal object in the relationship, and it is probably why the scene keeps getting written about.

Did Anakin build them? Where the sources disagree

This is the one question about the pair that the sources do not settle.

Ahsoka's hilt opened on a workbench, its internal connector exposed

Two sources disagree on who built them. The hardware carries no maker’s mark.

The StarWars.com Databank entry for her sabers says that while training under Anakin, Ahsoka became a skilled duelist and built a second, green-bladed saber with a shorter, shoto-style blade herself. On that account, the master taught the student, and the student made her own weapon.

A recent DK reference guide describes it differently: during Ahsoka's apprenticeship, it says, Anakin crafted paired sabers for her to extend her reach and help her defend against larger foes.

Source Who made the pair What it emphasizes
StarWars.com Databank Ahsoka built the shoto; Anakin trained her The apprentice's own work
DK reference guide Anakin crafted the pair for her The master's design for her reach
Both The pair was made for her hands, not his —

They are not the same claim, and nothing in the episodes resolves it. What both versions agree on is the part that matters for a buyer: the set was built around a small fighter's reach, and it was never a spare weapon of Anakin's that he passed along.

Which replica matches this scene?

Three builds in the current lineup reproduce the TCW-pattern pair. All three ship as a set of two hilts, which is the minimum requirement for matching the scene.

Three builds, one screen design: all three ship as a pair.

Model Hilts Hilt length Blade OD Electronics Price
Ahsoka TCW Ver. 2 280 / 210 mm 1 in S-RGB, SN-Pixel V4 PRO, Proffieboard V2.2 $595 – $825
89Sabers Ahsoka TCW Ver. 2 280 / 210 mm 1 in Proffieboard V3.9 $965
Ahsoka SE 2 290 / 250 mm 1 in RGB S16 up to Proffieboard V2.2 $165 – $500

Prices and configurations as listed in October 2026; check each product page for current pricing. The SE pair runs longer in both hilts than the other two builds.

The Ahsoka TV Ver. is not on that list on purpose. It reproduces the later white pair with curved hilts and a 7/8-inch blade, which is a different weapon from a different era. It is a good saber; it is not this scene. The differences between the two eras are set out in the Ahsoka TCW vs Rebels saber comparison.

The listing photos show the pair lit green. All three cores can run blue, so the blade color on a shipped saber is a setting rather than a fixed choice.

Ahsoka SE lightsaber set - two hilts with a longer main hilt and a shoto

Ahsoka SE saber set

Two hilts from $165, the cheapest way into a matched pair. Longer in both hilts at 290 mm and 250 mm, so the shoto reads closer to a second full saber.

What ships inside the box differs more than the price suggests. The 89Sabers set is the most complete: both blades cut to length, two blade plugs, two chargers, two 18650 cells, gloves, a stand and a hard case. The TCW Ver. and the SE both list 36-inch and 32-inch blades among their options, with the electronics tier deciding how the ignition behaves. The SE is the most configurable and the easiest to get wrong: its options stack core, blade length and emitter finish, so two buyers at the same price can end up with different sabers.

One specification catches people out when they buy a second blade later. All three sets use a 1-inch outer diameter, while the TV version uses 7/8 inch. A spare blade bought for one will not fit the other.

What does the gift actually mean?

Three questions sit underneath the scene, and none of them has an official answer. Each answer is a reading rather than a record.

A closed black case on a hangar floor with blue light escaping the seam

What he hands over is not a weapon. It is an acknowledgement.

Why did he still have them? Because nobody had told him to dispose of them, and because he is not a person who lets go of things quietly. The sabers sat in his keeping the whole time she was building a life outside the Order.

Why does returning them land harder than giving her something new? Because it is not generosity, it is recognition. A new weapon says "here is a gift." Her own weapons, repaired and improved, say "I kept these for you, because I did not accept that you were gone."

And why does the warmest scene in the arc feel like a goodbye? Because it is staged as one. The sabers are handed over in the middle of a departure, and the audience knows what neither character does. The blades are blue now, the same blue as his, and that is the last thing he gives her before he stops being the person who could give her anything at all.

Blue is the color he carried for his entire Jedi career, and matching her blades to it is the least subtle thing he does in the arc. For a man whose defining flaw is an inability to accept loss, a weapon that says mine in his own color is about as honest as he gets.

Frequently asked questions

Did Anakin give Ahsoka his own saber?

No. The pair he handed her in season 7 was her own, kept by Anakin after she left the Order and returned after he had adjusted it. His personal saber stayed with him, was lost on Mustafar, later reached Luke, and eventually passed to Rey.

What episode does Anakin return Ahsoka's sabers?

"Old Friends Not Forgotten," TCW season 7, episode 9, set in 19 BBY. He gives them to her just before he and Obi-Wan leave for Coruscant, and she ignites them for the first time since she left the Order.

Why are the blades blue?

He adjusted the sabers while they were in his keeping, and the blades came up blue instead of green. Official material confirms the change and stops there. Dave Filoni has said he wanted a clear visual connection between master and apprentice, so her blades now match Anakin's blue.

Did Anakin build Ahsoka's sabers?

The sources disagree. The StarWars.com Databank says Ahsoka built the shoto herself under his tutelage. A DK reference guide says Anakin crafted the pair for her. Both agree the set was made for her hands rather than his.

Why does Ahsoka use two sabers?

She pairs a full-length blade with a shorter shoto, a Jar'Kai style that suits a small, fast fighter who needs to cover the inside line against opponents with longer reach. According to the StarWars.com Databank, she built the second saber while training under Anakin.

Are her white sabers the same pair?

No. The blue pair is left in the wreckage after Order 66 to make the Empire believe she died. The white blades belong to a different, later pair.

Which replica matches the pair he returned?

Any two-hilt TCW-pattern set: the Ahsoka TCW Ver. from $595, the 89Sabers version at $965, or the Ahsoka SE from $165. The TV version is a different weapon from a later era, with curved hilts and a 7/8-inch blade.

Is this an officially licensed replica?

No. Sabers sold by CCSabers are character-inspired builds made by independent makers such as 89Sabers, TXQ and LGT. They are not licensed SW products, and nothing here is presented as an official replica of a screen-used prop.
