From KOTOR Jedi prodigy to Sith Lord to redeemed legend — why Revan's blade is purple, how his sabers changed across his life, and which of the three CCSabers replicas fits your use case.

Who this is for: KOTOR and SWTOR fans looking to buy a Darth Revan saber — whether for display, cosplay, or dueling.

What you'll find here: Revan's complete story, every blade color he wielded and why, and a clear comparison of the three Revan sabers at CCSabers so you can choose without guessing.

Who Is Darth Revan?

Revan originates in Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR, BioWare, 2003) — set roughly 4,000 years before the Skywalker Saga. He is one of the most powerful Force users in SW history: a Jedi general who defied the Council, conquered the Republic as a Sith Lord, was captured and memory-wiped, then chose to return to the light of his own free will.

His story is classified as Legends (the former Expanded Universe), though Revan has received canonical acknowledgements in later media. The SWTOR MMO (2011–present) significantly expanded his arc, adding a post-KOTOR storyline in which he becomes trapped between light and darkness for centuries.

The Mandalorian Wars — Jedi Defector

When the Mandalorian clans launched their crusade against the Republic, the Jedi Council refused to act, bound by a doctrine of non-intervention. Revan defied them, rallied fellow Jedi, and led the Republic to victory. His final move at Malachor V — activating a superweapon that killed thousands of his own soldiers alongside the enemy — delivered victory at a cost that foreshadowed his fall.

The Fall — Darth Revan, Dark Lord of the Sith

Pursuing the retreating Mandalorians into unknown space, Revan and his closest ally Malak encountered the ancient Sith Empire. They returned transformed — as Darth Revan and Darth Malak. Unlike most Sith motivated by destruction, Revan's conquest of the Republic was calculated: he sought to forge a galaxy strong enough to face the hidden Sith Empire he had discovered. Dark means, purposeful ends.

When Malak betrayed him and a Jedi strike team captured his broken body, the Council made a controversial choice: wipe his memories and give him a new identity. The amnesiac Revan eventually rediscovered his past — and made a conscious choice to reject the dark side.

Revan's Philosophy — Beyond the Jedi-Sith Divide

What makes Revan legendary is not his power — it is his refusal to accept the binary. As a Jedi he learned compassion and discipline, and saw the Order's rigidity as weakness. As a Sith he gained decisive power, and recognised that unchecked darkness consumes itself. His conclusion: the Force is not inherently light or dark; it simply is. Wisdom comes from integrating both, not from choosing one.

"He remembered how to be Revan again — and that was who he chose to be." This act of will — choosing redemption rather than accepting it — is what separates Revan from almost every other Force user in SW lore.

Revan's Saber Colors: Blue, Red, and Purple Explained

Darth Revan purple neopixel lightsaber — KOTOR character portrait, CCSabers 2026 guide

Revan is one of the few SW characters to canonically wield three blade colors across his life — each a direct reflection of where he stood in the Force at that moment.

Blue
Jedi Padawan → General
Standard Jedi Guardian blade, carried from his early training through the Mandalorian Wars — before his fall.

Red
Darth Revan — Sith Lord
Sith-bled crystal, wielded as Dark Lord during his conquest of the Republic. In SWTOR, sometimes dual-wielded alongside purple.

Purple
Redeemed Revan — Balance
His most iconic blade. Represents the synthesis of Jedi and Sith — the visual symbol of his philosophy and his most recognisable weapon.

Why does Revan sometimes have two sabers? In SWTOR, Revan is depicted dual-wielding red and purple simultaneously — one blade for each side of the Force he has mastered. This is the inspiration behind the Revan JD 2.0's switchable Jedi / Sith mode.

Why Is Revan's Saber Purple?

Darth Revan lightsaber hilt design — KOTOR original to SWTOR refined crossguard

In SW lore, saber color reflects a Force user's relationship with the Force. Blue indicates Jedi Guardians devoted to protection. Green marks Jedi Consulars focused on wisdom. Red is the fractured, corrupted crystal of the Sith — bled through pain and hatred.

Purple sits in the space between blue and red. For Revan, it is not a compromise — it is a synthesis. His crystal represents:

  • Balance — not the absence of light or dark, but the deliberate integration of both
  • Individuality — a refusal to conform to Jedi or Sith doctrine
  • Earned wisdom — understanding that comes only from walking both paths
  • Agency — a blade wielded by someone who consciously chose what they became

Revan's purple blade announced to the galaxy: I am neither purely Jedi nor wholly Sith. I walked both paths — and chose what I would be.

Design Evolution: KOTOR (2003) → SWTOR (2011)

SWTOR refinement (2011–present): The MMO significantly developed the design — a more pronounced curved crossguard, detailed metallic finishes suggesting ancient craftsmanship, and a refined emitter that reads as both Jedi and Sith in influence. This is the version most modern replicas draw from.

What the best replicas capture: The curved crossguard that immediately distinguishes the hilt from any other in SW; surface detail that implies millennia of history; and weight distribution suited to a duelist who trained in both Jedi and Sith traditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Darth Revan's Saber purple?

Purple sits between Jedi blue and Sith red in the Force spectrum. For Revan it represents the synthesis of both paths — having walked as Jedi Knight and Sith Lord and emerged as neither. It is the visual embodiment of his core belief: that the Force is not inherently light or dark, and that wisdom comes from integrating both rather than pledging to one.

Unlike Mace Windu's purple blade — which reflects proximity to the dark side while remaining a Jedi — Revan's purple specifically signals a deliberate philosophical position outside the Jedi-Sith binary altogether.

Is Revan Canon or Legends?

Revan's primary story — KOTOR (2003) and its SWTOR expansions — is Legends (the former Expanded Universe, declared non-canonical after Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm).

However, he has received canonical acknowledgements: his name appears in TROS Visual Dictionary, and elements of Old Republic lore surface in recent animated projects. For collectors, this distinction rarely matters — Revan's cultural weight in the SW community is independent of his canon status.

What is the difference between the SS 3.0, JD 2.0, and JD V2?

Revan SS 3.0 — flagship materials: chrome-plated aluminium hilt, leather-wrapped grip, heavy brass pommel. The display collector's choice. 287mm.

Revan JD 2.0 — dual identity: switches between Jedi purple and Sith red, with dedicated sound fonts for each mode. Best for fans who want to engage with both sides of Revan's arc.

Revan JD V2 — durability and value: solid metal build, available with Xenopixel 50W (the brightest Neopixel option in the lineup). Best all-rounder for display and dueling combined.

Can I duel with a Revan Neopixel saber?

Neopixel sabers handle light-to-moderate choreographed sparring — cosplay duels, photo shoots, flow arts. The internal LED strip can be damaged by hard repeated impacts.

For full-contact competitive sparring, choose the RGB tier of any Revan model. The hollow polycarbonate blade has no internal components to damage. The JD V2 is the most robust hilt for regular sparring use.

Which Revan sabers have Bluetooth app control?
  • SN-Pixel V4 PRO (SS 3.0 and JD 2.0) — ForcePark app for iOS and Android. 27 pre-loaded fonts, wireless colour and effect switching.
  • Xenopixel (JD V2) — Xeno Configurator app. SD card customisation, 12 blade effects, 50W output.

Proffieboard V2.2 does not include Bluetooth. Customisation requires a computer connected via USB and editing ProffieOS config files. If you want wireless control, choose SN-Pixel or Xenopixel.

Are Revan sabers allowed at conventions?

Generally yes. Most major conventions permit aluminium-hilt prop sabers, typically requiring the blade to be present and the saber to be peace-bonded. Always check the specific prop weapons policy for your event before attending.

For convention use, the SN-Pixel tier is practical — Bluetooth app lets you switch blade colour and effects wirelessly between photo opportunities without needing a laptop.

What fighting style does Revan use?

Revan is most associated with Form VI (Niman) — the synthesis form that draws from all seven forms without specialising in any one. This mirrors his broader philosophy: mastery through integration, not rigidity. In SWTOR depictions he also demonstrates Form IV (Ataru) acrobatics and draws on Juyo (Form VII) techniques when channelling the dark side. His cross-form fluency is itself a physical expression of his belief that the Force cannot be reduced to a single path.

Revan endures because he refused to be defined by either side. His purple blade is not a compromise between Jedi and Sith — it is a refusal to accept that the choice was ever binary. Over two decades after KOTOR, that idea still resonates more than almost anything else in the SW Expanded Universe.

Whichever saber you choose — the flagship SS 3.0, the dual-mode JD 2.0, or the durable JD V2 — you are connecting to a character whose story is fundamentally about agency: the idea that you are not the sum of your worst moments, and that what you choose to become matters more than where you started.
