Darth Maul - What You Should Know

Darth Maul - What You Should Know

Trained by Darth Sidious, Darth Maul is one of the more intriguing lightsaber-wielding Sith in Star Wars. From the time we first see him on screen in Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace to his death at the hands of Obi-Wan, there has been a lot of lore written about this fantastic character.

1. Origins

Darth Maul is actually a Nightbrother from the planet Dathomir and among the people Zabrak. His mother, or at least the person that claims to be his biological mother, is Talzin, the leader of the Nightsisters. Those incredible horns and facial markings are part of his people. The older the males of his race get, the more developed those horns become.

2. Birth of a Sith

Originally, Maul’s mother was supposed to be an apprentice to Darth Sidious. The idea was that combining her powerful witchcraft with the Force would make for an unstoppable foe. However, when Sidious came across the intensity of Maul’s power, he kidnapped the boy and raised him to hate the Jedi.

3. Yes, he kills obi-wan’s love

One of the more exciting storylines we have yet to see unfold in the live-action canon is the death of Obi-Wan’s love interest, the Duchess Satine. This could be explored somewhere in the upcoming Obi-Wan series on Disney Plus (fingers crossed). Essentially, she is the leader of Mandalore and is attacked because Maul learns of her hidden love for Kenobi.

4. He has a much bigger role in other projects

Yes, we can all relive those hooded moments in the original series with Darth Maul, but if you want to see him flourish on his own, you have to get into the side projects.

Things like The Clone Wars and some comic books have way more information about Darth Maul and his biography. This character only had 9 minutes in the original 133-minute film debut, but lives on in many other areas. There was even supposed to be a video game for a hot moment by LucasArts titled Star Wars: Darth Maul, but it eventually fell through when Episodes II and III came out.

Darth Maul - The character that we need

The global pandemic set so many of these film schedules all out of whack that it is tough to peg down any specific rumor into reality right now. So instead, we suggest everyone keep their ears and eyes open to future instances of the dual lightsaber-wielding villain that has captivated so many audience members. We only scratch the surface in the article of a vibrant history and intertwined destiny with so much of Star Wars Canon.

This is a rich area of storytelling that has other family members, the introduction of witchcraft, and seeds for beloved characters like Lando, Obi-Wan, and Han Solo ripe for the picking. All we can say is the more, the merrier!
